A bold purpose

Uniting partnerships to co-produce data driven, full end-to-end solutions with global impact; sustainably and equitably eliminating the waste of life caused by infectious diseases.

Managing the growing threat from Infectious Diseases and AMR is one of the greatest challenges of our time

Climate change, rapid urbanisation, global travel, and changing land use are dramatically increasing the risk of emerging infectious diseases.

Between 2025 and 2050, 39 million lives are forecast to be lost to antimicrobial resistance (AMR)—equivalent to the population of Canada (source: University of Oxford).
Additionally, there is a 27.5% probability of a pandemic occurring within the next 10 years, putting millions of lives and trillions of dollars at risk (source: Airfinity).

EIT Pathogena are targeting the millions of lives lost through the inappropriate treatment of infectious diseases and the avoidable escalation from local outbreaks to pandemics.

Empowering a new paradigm: from silo science to global impact

EIT Pathogena’s unique operating model tackles the fundamental global system challenges. It is reshaping how science will generate global impact and enable the development of sustainable, full end to end solutions capable of transforming infectious disease management, whilst concurrently fuelling and funding the next cycle of breakthroughs.

By empowering diverse global talent, harnessing the transformative potential of AI, and ensuring substantial, sustained investment, we—together as a global partnership—will accelerate scientific discovery and deliver the necessary transformation, at scale.

Revolutionising Infectious Disease Prevention and Treatment On a Global Scale (2)

A reimagined path to a sustainable, high-impact, global approach to managing infectious diseases

Imagine a world where:

  • Clinicians around the globe, in routine healthcare settings, have the technology to make a highly accurate genomic diagnosis of the pathogen and prescribe the precise treatment

  • De-identified genomic data from these point of care diagnostic tools are captured in real time, informing a central pathogen reference database and enabling the prediction and prevention of potential outbreaks

  • A global data sharing network enables public health, industry and academics to analyse this data for the global good, developing better preventative and reactive solutions to infectious diseases.

The “Always On” Opportunity

EIT Pathogena, through global partnerships and collaboration, is pioneering laboratory, hardware, data and analytical approaches – powered by genome sequencing and AI – to enable real-time diagnostics and population-scale intelligence, effectively revolutionising infectious disease management at a global scale.

We will move from a model which monitors a few pathogens in a few geographies across fragmented health care systems to a joined up, global approach to identifying and tackling infectious diseases.

"Always On" not only provides early warnings of potential outbreaks, a transformative shift in global pandemic preparedness, it will contribute to an ever-growing pathogen reference library and enable collaboration at a local, national and international level for the global good. A global data sharing network will empower healthcare, academics and industry to generate deeper, more purposeful insights and fuel the healthcare solutions of tomorrow.

3 Strategic Pillars

The world’s largest pathogen reference database

We are assembling an unparalleled pathogen genomics atlas of whole genome sequences, phenotypes and de-identified clinical metadata. This resource supports early identification of emerging variants, facilitates genomic inference of resistance and virulence, and will serve as the foundation for next-generation research and public health interventions, ensuring global representation and accessibility.

A global data-sharing network

Infectious diseases do not respect borders—neither should our response. We are building a global network of partners committed to secure, de-identified pathogen data and to the delivery of high-impact collaborative solutions for outbreak prediction and prevention. Insights from this data will be the catalyst for critical new academic models and the next wave of preventative and reactive treatments for infectious diseases.

Deploying next-generation sequencing platforms
We are deploying cutting-edge metagenomic platforms that are portable, rapid, and user-friendly—designed to bring real-time genomic insights to both advanced laboratories and field settings. This approach supports timely diagnosis, informed antimicrobial therapy, and earlier identification of outbreak-related strains. It also strengthens the integration of genomics into infectious disease management and the direction of travel towards genomic devices within routine healthcare settings.
